Central Europe is often considered to be a source of nationalist pathologies and plagues that could infect "proper" (Western) Europe. This image is at best outdated, as Western Europe and the United States have (and always have had) their own nationalist and conservative authoritarian resources. Moreover, Central Europe has also been a space of original political thought, albeit often obscure or forgotten, which can contribute to our understanding of the contemporary world beyond the borders of the region.

V prvním čísle 55. ročníku (2020) Mezinárodních vztahů vyšel článek TomášeProfanta s názvem Rasizmus v rozvoji a rozvojové spolupráci. Publikovánítextu spustilo živou diskusi, kterou se redakce rozhodla podpořit oslovenímněkterých dalších autorů a autorek a transformovat do podoby diskusníhofóra. Jednotlivé příspěvky, které na rozdíl od Profantova článkuneprocházely plnohodnotným recenzním řízením, se tak vyrovnávajís argumenty a metodologickými postupy původního textu, rozvíjejí jej alokalizují do místních podmínek či poukazují na empirické příklady, jež jejpotvrzují. Celé fórum uzavírá odpověď Tomáše Profanta na jednotlivévznesené připomínky. Byť fórum reaguje na konkrétní článek, doufáme, žeby i tato diskuse mohla přispět k širší reflexi práce s konceptem rasismu ajejí implikace pro politickou praxi. Věříme, že právě v tomto je tato debatav současném akademickém i politickém kontextu velmi aktuální.

The research note attempts to contribute to the analysis of the ideology of the extreme right. Building on Barthes and Žižek, it proposes that we should not reduce this ideology to rational postulates or statements by the participants themselves, but that instead we should look for it in their praxis. It proposes that the figure of the leader should be perceived as an important part of this ideology in terms of both the significance of the leader in the extreme right's belief systems, and the role of leaders in various extra-parliamentary, extreme-right formations. The empirical part of the article is devoted to the figure of the leader in three periods of the existence of the Czech extreme right, and analyses the transformations in the characteristics that these leaders shared during the movement's beginnings (1989-2001), the period of its relative decline and repression (2001-2015), and finally, during the period of the rise of Islamophobia (2015-2017). The article concludes that for leaders it is important to have immediate contact with the movement, and to maintain closeness to fellow fighters. This characteristic may outweigh the importance of the cultural capital of musicians from well-known subculture bands and the symbolic capital that may be possessed by veterans from the distant past.

The article reconstructs the ambivalence of the relationship of Czech society to the Habsburg monarchy and its legacy. While this period can be retrospectively contrasted with the twentieth century as a time of relative stability, it is also recognized in Czech collective memory as a time of national subalternity and inequality. Sometimes the imperial legacy is also blamed for the absence of civic virtues in Czech political culture. The study traces the roots of these Czech approaches in the thought of Czech historian and national leader František Palacký (who proposed federalist reform of the empire) and the ideas of the first Czechoslovak president Tomáš G. Masaryk (who declared "de-Austrianization" to be a doctrine of the new state as well as a basis for new civic virtues). The essay also touches on popular culture images in Hašek΄s Schweik and the phenomenon of Jára da Cimrman, which contribute to an ambivalent and infantilizing image of the times of empire.

V prvním letošním čísle Mezinárodních vztahů vyšel článek Tomáše Profantas názvem Rasizmus v rozvoji a rozvojové spolupráci. Publikování textuspustilo živou diskusi, kterou se redakce Mezinárodních vztahů rozhodlapodpořit oslovením některých dalších autorů a autorek a transformovat dopodoby diskusního fóra. Jednotlivé příspěvky, které na rozdíl od Profantovačlánku neprocházely plnohodnotným recenzním řízením, se tak vyrovnávajís argumenty a metodologickými postupy původního textu, rozvíjejí jej alokalizují do místních podmínek, či poukazují na empirické příklady, které jejpotvrzují. Celé fórum uzavírá odpověď Tomáše Profanta na jednotlivévznesené připomínky. Byť fórum reaguje na konkrétní článek, doufáme, žeby i tato diskuse mohla přispět k širší reflexi práce s konceptem rasismu ajejí implikace pro politickou praxi. The paper is based on an analysis of Czech anti‑communism. It starts with a brief definition of anti‑communism. Then it presents six possible typologies of anti‑communism based on various questions: type of political mission, political background, actual political function, proposed cure, and spatial scope. There then follows a presentation of various phenomena that are framed in an anti‑communist way: the Communist Party, Social Democrats, liberals, the young generation, but also the contemporary West with its "progressivist" tendencies. In the two final sections the paper focuses on comparison in the Central European context. It shows that in the Czech context the transfer of German experience was (in)adequate for different reasons than in the Polish and Hungarian cases, namely because of the dynamics connected with the different trajectories of post‑communist political subjects.
